Pumpkin Seeds

I saved some seeds from our class pumpkin.  The children planted two seeds.  We checked the plants out two days ago.  We observed roots and some plants starting to poke through the dirt.  We have seen a lot of growth in just a couple of days.  Here are the children looking at their plants.

Writer's Workshop

We are working on writing true stories.  The children are working on making their writing easy to read.  The children are doing much better adding spaces between words and writing more sounds when sound spelling.  Here are a few children sharing their books.

Mr. Turkey Song

We have been singing the song Mr. Turkey.  The first day we sang turkey with the letter T.  After the song, we thought of food items that begin with the letter T.  Each day since, we substitute the T with a different letter.  Today was the letter L.  Enjoy the song Mr. Lurkey.

Journal Writing

We wrote about one thing we did over the weekend.  Our focus is starting our sentence with a capital letter, putting space between words and ending our sentence with a period.

Habit 3

The last two days we have focused on habit 3, putting first things first.  We read a story about the importance of doing first things first.  The children shared jobs they can do at home and activities they can do at school before playing.  I am telling the children the work and learning must come first and then they can play.  The children wrote a sentence about what they can do before they can play.  Here are a few children sharing their first things first writing.

Adopt-A-Family

We have filled 6 boxes full of items for our family.  Mrs. Kayser, Caroline's mom, brought the class treats.

Writing Celebration

We celebrated finishing the first writing unit.  The children shared their stories with a small group.  We looked at our first writing in kindergarten and compared it to our books we just wrote.  We have grown as writers!  We ended the celebration with a toast to " best writers".

Letter of the Day

Since most of the children knew the letters, we do a short letter of the day activity.  We watch a Have Fun Teaching video.  The video stresses the sound the letter makes, words that begin with that letter and how to make the letter.  We have been watching one video a day.  The children make a tally mark each time they see the letter in the word.  They are looking to see if the letter is at the beginning, middle or the end of the word.  You have seen these papers in your child's folder.  If your child would like to watch the videos at home, go to You Tube.  In the search box, type "have fun teaching letter a".  The letter a video should come up.  You can search other letters the same way just change the letter a.  Enjoy the clip of the children working.

Journal Writing

We wrote about something we did over the weekend.  The children are making great progress with sound spelling and putting spaces between words.

Buddy Planting

The children had fun planting bulbs with their buddies.  We can't wait until Spring to see tulips, daffodils and Dutch irises in our school garden.

Learning about Solid Shapes

We have been learning about the sphere, the cube, the cone and the cylinder.  Listen to these boys share something that they have learned.

Rhyming Song

We have been singing a song that practices rhyming words.  We are trying to figure out what food is cooking in the kitchen.  Enjoy the video.

Show Me

The children are doing an app called Show Me.  They can draw or take a photo.  Then they can write a sentence and record themselves reading the sentence.

Rascal Goes to NJ

Rascal had a good time in NJ with Katy's relatives.  Rascal brought back some yummy treats for everyone!
